The news that Sony will stop releasing its flagship projects on PC has sparked a wave of discussions and speculations. Among the possible reasons cited were the declining profitability of PC ports, concerns about weakening the PlayStation brand, as well as competition from Microsoft and its future Project Helix platform, which, according to the company, will be able to run both Xbox games and PC projects.

However, former head of technology at Bluepoint Games, Peter Dalton, offered an alternative explanation. In his opinion, a more serious threat to Sony may not be Microsoft, but the ecosystem being created by Valve around the Steam platform.

Dalton noted that a new type of gaming device is gradually forming in the market. We are talking about consoles and hybrid systems that offer the convenience of traditional consoles, but at the same time provide access to a huge library of PC games. He cited the Steam Deck portable system and the Steam Machine family of projects as examples of such devices.

According to the developer, if Valve releases a full-fledged console based on Steam that offers a "console" experience and at the same time access to the entire library of PC games, it could become an extremely attractive alternative. In this case, releasing Sony games simultaneously on PC and consoles could backfire on the company itself: a potential Steam console would allow users to get both the convenience of a console and access to more games.

It would be ironic if, after decades of traditional console competition, Valve ended up winning the "console war."
