Even Modern Consoles Can't Run Assassin's Creed Unity at 4K 60 FPS - Digital Foundry Conducted Testing

Ubisoft's game can still challenge the "hardware."

Recently, a Digital Foundry specialist studied an update for Assassin's Creed Unity. Ubisoft added 60 FPS support to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series versions.

Resolution in AC Unity on consoles:

  • Xbox Series X — 2880x1620
  • Xbox Series S — 960p
  • PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro have the same resolution — 2304x1296

The release version of Assassin's Creed Unity was remembered by many players not only for its high level of detail, but also for its impressive technical problems.

As it turned out, even modern consoles cannot provide stable 60 FPS throughout the entire game.

A Digital Foundry specialist shared his observations:

[...] most of the gameplay runs at 60 FPS, but it heavily depends on the specific situation. It would be more accurate to say that the game generally runs in the range of 50–60 FPS, with drops to 40 in particularly demanding scenes — especially in cutscenes, when Ubisoft applies a very "heavy" depth of field effect, significantly reducing the frame rate. The highest average frame rate is shown by PlayStation 5 Pro, but, to be honest, I would still prefer Series X: the system VRR on Xbox works even in backward compatible games, but not on PS5. Therefore, thanks to the higher image clarity and VRR support, the Series X version looks better and runs more stable.
