Won't fit on a cartridge: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will take up more than 100 gigabytes on Switch 2
Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade's record will be broken.
The size of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on Nintendo Switch 2 may exceed 100 GB. The updated Japanese My Nintendo page indicates that the game will take up 102 GB of memory, while the European Nintendo website currently states 91.5 GB. Apparently, the final size of Rebirth has not yet been approved.
Even the smaller of the two options makes Final Fantasy VII Rebirth the largest release on Switch 2. For comparison, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade takes up 90.4 GB, Split Fiction — 71 GB, and Cyberpunk 2077 — about 60 GB.
Due to such an impressive volume, the game will not be able to be released on a full cartridge with a complete set of data. The physical edition will be distributed in the form of a key card. The size of Nintendo cartridges simply does not allow accommodating the entire project.
Earlier, game director Naoki Hamaguchi already explained why Square Enix abandoned the classic cartridge. According to him, the data reading speed directly from the Switch 2 drive is approximately twice as fast as when loading from a game cartridge, and the game's architecture itself requires constant resource loading during gameplay.
