
PlayStation 3 emulator creators show performance boost on old graphics cards - five years of RPCS3 progress comparison
RPCS3 creators pay a lot of attention to optimizing for older hardware.
In early July, the developers of the RPCS3 emulator decided to talk about the significant progress they have made over the past years. Players were invited to look at the performance growth on old graphics cards:
We continue to improve RPCS3 for both new and old hardware! Five years ago, we added support for 2009 AMD HD 5000/6000 series graphics cards to the emulator. How has performance on old hardware changed since then? Here's a "then and now" comparison! [tests were conducted on a system:] FX-8350 @ 4.6 GHz, ATI HD 5850, 8 GB RAM, Linux 7.0, Mesa 26.0.5.
In the case of the Japanese role-playing game Persona 5 from Atlus, a 15 FPS increase was achieved — from ~35 to 50 frames at one point (comparing build 0.0.19 and the current emulator version 0.0.40):
In another case, the increase is small — only five frames, but this is a rise from 19 to 24 FPS:
Earlier this year, the creators of RPCS3 spoke about a major technical breakthrough. One tech enthusiast was able to implement new patterns for using the PlayStation 3 processor block. This allowed for a performance increase in some of the most demanding games on the console.
