Single-player story games remain the foundation of the gaming industry, says former PlayStation executive
The most vivid experiences are not delivered by multiplayer shooters.
Former Sony Interactive Entertainment America President Shawn Layden stated that single-player story games are still the foundation of the gaming industry, despite ongoing attempts by major companies to establish themselves in the game-as-a-service market.
According to Layden, it is projects with strong narrative components that helped build the modern gaming business and continue to ensure its sustainability. He noted that such games allow players to fully immerse themselves in the world and story, and then discuss their experiences with friends, regardless of the presence of a multiplayer mode.
I am a firm believer that single-player story games are not going away. They are what this business was built on. They are what sustain it.
He added that the most vivid gaming experiences are often associated with immersion in the world, characters, and narrative, rather than online matches. At the same time, Layden emphasized that he does not diminish the merits of multiplayer projects — for example, the first raids in Destiny 2 could indeed provide unforgettable emotions, but such cases are much rarer today.
The statements by the former head of PlayStation come amid Sony's continued investments in both large single-player projects and games-as-a-service. The company is preparing to release Marvel's Wolverine, Intergalactic, and God of War Laufey, while continuing to develop its live-service direction.
However, Sony's recent attempts to establish itself in the service game segment have been met with difficulties. Marathon faced low player activity, and Fairgame$ has been in production crisis for a long time after its announcement. Against this backdrop, the success of the company's future projects in the games-as-a-service genre remains questionable.
