Square Enix Closes Division Responsible for Western Games

Square Enix announced the closure of its publishing division, Square Enix Extreme Edges, which for nearly 16 years was responsible for releasing and promoting Western games in Japan.

Through this brand, Japanese players were offered series such as Call of Duty, Tomb Raider, Hitman, Deus Ex, and Life is Strange. The division was responsible for the marketing and distribution of Western projects in the Japanese market.

The company explained that today, such a division has lost its meaning. According to Square Enix, foreign games have become a common part of the Japanese market, so the need for a separate publishing brand has disappeared. The official statement also notes that the term "yōge," which in Japan referred to Western games, is gradually losing its significance.

However, Square Enix does not intend to abandon the release of Western projects in Japan. They will continue to be published without being separated into a distinct division. In the near future, the company will also gradually cease the operation of Square Enix Extreme Edges social media accounts.
