The new adaptation will transport Stephen King's cult story into the modern era of social media.
Entertainment Weekly has published exclusive shots from the "Carrie" series and a major interview with showrunner Mike Flanagan. The images feature Carrie White played by Summer Howell, her mother Margaret (Samantha Sloyan), schoolgirls Sue Snell (Siena Agudong) and Chris Hargensen (Alison Thornton), as well as Principal Grayle, played by Matthew Lillard.
Showrunner Mike Flanagan has transformed the classic story into an eight-episode drama and set the action in the present day. In the new version, Carrie spent her entire childhood at home with her mother and enters a regular school for the first time after her father's sudden death. There, the girl faces bullying that quickly spreads on social media, simultaneously awakening her telekinetic abilities. Flanagan explained this "modernization" by his desire to avoid self-repetition:
"The only possible approach was to create something new from the components of 'Carrie.' Otherwise, there's no point in going down a path that has already been perfectly trodden before us."
The series will retain the key milestones of the novel, but Flanagan warned that the characters will reach the finale by a different path, and some iconic scenes will unfold differently. In addition, the adaptation will expand the mythology: starting from the second episode, each episode will open with a flashback about women from other eras and countries who encountered a similar gift. This is how the creators plan to develop King's idea of a special "telekinesis gene."
"Carrie" will premiere on Prime Video in autumn 2026. The exact release date has not yet been announced.
