The actor rose to fame for his role as paleontologist Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg's iconic film.

New Zealand actor Sam Neill passed away on July 13 in Sydney at the age of 78. His family confirmed the news on social media. Relatives did not disclose the cause of death, calling the event unexpected.

“Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that characterized him throughout his life. The loss was sudden and unexpected, but we are comforted that Sam beat cancer,” the actor’s loved ones said in a statement. The family also thanked the staff of St. Vincent’s Private Hospital in Sydney for their assistance.

In 2022, Neill was diagnosed with stage three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare form of blood cancer. After chemotherapy stopped working, the actor underwent experimental treatment using CAR-T cell therapy. In April 2026, he announced that examinations no longer showed signs of the disease.

Neill gained worldwide fame for his role as paleontologist Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg's “Jurassic Park.” The actor later reprised this role in the third installment of the franchise and the film “Jurassic World Dominion.”

Over a career spanning more than five decades, Neill starred in films such as “Possession,” “Dead Calm,” “The Hunt for Red October,” “The Piano,” “In the Mouth of Madness,” “Event Horizon,” and the series “Peaky Blinders.” For his role in the mini-series “Merlin,” the actor was nominated for Emmy and Golden Globe awards. In 2022, Neill was knighted for his services to cinema.

Neill's last film appearance will be in “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” scheduled for release on March 26, 2027. The film is currently in post-production.
