A project created by Hironobu Sakaguchi and Nobuo Uematsu for the Xbox 360 became an emotional benchmark for Guillaume Broch. He noted that the depth of the themes and the script impressed him so much that he called it the last game that made him cry.
For me, Lost Odyssey was the last great turn-based RPG with realistic graphics. It has very serious themes that are beautifully revealed — it's the last game that made me cry.
The developer believes that the criticism was too harsh, accusing the project of an "outdated" approach against the backdrop of the popularity of open worlds. According to Broch, the linearity, the world map, and the powerful narrative component make Lost Odyssey one of the best JRPGs of its generation.
The weak distribution is due to the platform — the game was released on the Xbox 360, while JRPG fans played on PlayStation. Despite the fact that the project became a cult classic, no sequel followed.
Today, the legacy continues in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. The turn-based system with timing, realistic graphics, and mature themes continue the traditions of Lost Odyssey and classic JRPGs. Expedition 33 brings back a style that has long been considered outdated in the genre, and became the most nominated project at The Game Awards 2025. Broch hopes for a remaster of Lost Odyssey so that a new generation of players can discover the cult game.
