Rick and Morty Season 9 Debuts with 100% on Rotten Tomatoes
Formally, this is the best result in the history of the animated series, but there's a catch.
Rick and Morty Season 9 premiered with 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, formally becoming the highest-rated season in the show's history. However, this achievement comes with an important caveat: at the time of publication, the continuation had only received seven critic reviews.
For comparison, the first season had 29 reviews with a 97% rating, the third had 175 reviews and 96%, and the fourth received 96% after 107 reviews. In other words, the absolute percentage for the ninth season looks impressive, but for now, it is based on a much smaller sample.
A similar trend has been observed for several years. Since approximately the sixth season, the number of reviews for Rick and Morty has been rapidly declining, along with the fading effect of the cultural phenomenon the series was in the late 2010s. Therefore, the current 100% looks more like a successful start than an unequivocal confirmation of the status of "best season ever."
Nevertheless, ScreenRant reviewer Ben Gibbons wrote that Rick and Morty "has never been this good," specifically praising the creators for their ability to continue experimenting so many years after the show's start. Critics also praise the acting and smoother animation, while among the rare complaints is a less dense narrative pace in individual episodes.
The new season premieres on Adult Swim on May 24.
