"Blood and Cheese" Was Just the Beginning: "House of the Dragon" Showrunner Says Season Three Will Be Even Darker
The Targaryen civil war will reach its peak and take the show to extremely dark and brutal places.
“House of the Dragon” showrunner Ryan Condal warned that the third season of the series will be even darker, as the show will remain true to the “Fire & Blood” chronicle.
“I mean, I don’t know. Do you really expect happy endings in Westeros? It seems to me that this show touches on extremely dark themes – those we have already visited and those we are yet to encounter.”
Given that the second season already shocked audiences with the brutal Blood and Cheese scene, the bar for violence will only rise. The plot is based on a real historical prototype – the Anarchy period in medieval England, when one large family literally tore the country apart in disputes over the throne. Condal admitted that due to the specifics of the source material, adapting this story for the screen is incredibly difficult:
“One of the main difficulties in adapting “Fire & Blood” is not to turn the series into a pointless, grim death march simply because of the nature of the story itself. This family is tearing itself apart over the question of whether a woman should sit on the throne.”
Nevertheless, the creators try to find even faint glimmers of humanity in this story to maintain balance. According to the showrunner, even a single ray of light against the backdrop of storm clouds seems much brighter:
“And what have they learned during this incredibly dark and self-destructive time? I don’t think happy endings are in our plans, but I would say that leaving viewers with something to hold onto at the end is something I take very seriously, as we are currently writing the script for the fourth season.”
The third season of “House of the Dragon” will premiere on June 21, 2026, on HBO Max.
